A Textiles Project for Remembrance and Refugees

In November, we remember those who have been affected by war as part of our Remembrance Day Commemorations. This year, the College has focused on refugees and those displaced from their homes.
In the PAC Foyer, you may have seen the display of artwork and textiles designed and made by the College community – but this exhibition aims to help those less fortunate than ourselves. The quilts that have been produced by the College community will be sent to refugee children, currently living in Chang Rai and will keep them warm and comforted this coming winter.
The project started with students learning about the humanitarian crisis in Myanmar, understanding the challenges refugees face, and reflecting on the power of community support. We partnered with The Last Resort to send these quilts to the New Vision for Life Foundation, an orphanage in Chiang Rai. Originally housing 400 children, the orphanage now supports an additional 125, putting significant strain on its resources.
Our College’ community; students, teachers, parents and staff embraced the project wholeheartedly. Each quilt square is unique, designed with fabrics, colours and patterns symbolising hope, peace, and unity. Year 5 students personalized their squares with drawings, messages and cultural symbols.
Beyond individual contributions, parents and staff joined together, bringing fabric donations and sewing expertise to after-school and weekend workshops. These gatherings became a hub for conversation, building connections, and raising awareness about the refugee experience and global humanitarian issues. The completed quilts are not just practical items; they are a testament to our community’s empathy and support. When delivered to families in Chiang Rai, these quilts will carry with them a message of care from afar.
Our thanks go to Friends of Dulwich, parent volunteers, and students in in the Junior and Senior School, along with our dedicated staff, especially Ms. Hayes, for their commitment to this meaningful endeavour.
