A Colourful Recap of Book Week 2024

A whirl of colourful characters filled the College today as the culmination of a full programme of Book Week events and activities. Students were not only creative and imaginative in their clothing but also sustainable. Borrowing, making, and creating book character outfits have been encouraged; the more homemade, the better. Read Worldwise, Books come alive, together we THRIVE has been the Book Week mantra this year. A belief that thriving for children is dependent on the skills nurtured through reading books.

A rich tapestry of events unfolded throughout the week with a Book Fair that started in DUCKS and ended in the Greenhouse and collaborative buddy reading across the whole College. Students and staff alike luxuriated in the Drop Everything and Read session, which led to reading in some unusual places! The school has been buzzing with the excitement of our Book Character parades. A special mention to our guest author, Jonathan Meres, who, through his comedian-style presentations, captivated audiences in each school and had them rolling with laughter.

Each school offered its unique opportunities: In DUCKS, it was story-inspired baking sessions, teachers reading at lunchtime in the Storytelling chair and stories in different languages. In Junior School, the library came alive at lunchtime with Mystery Readers; Book Ambassador organised activities where students could earn house points and daily book swaps. The Senior School encompassed the wonderful world of literature and embarked on a fun journey of competitions, challenges and lucky dip treats.

Whilst teachers and students embraced the many opportunities to share books and stories this week, parents also had the chance to join in with a guest talk by educationalist Kathryn Hemming on helping children find their next best read. FOD has also been instrumental in organising the Grand Book Week finale in the Greenhouse. This included storytelling, story sacks, book character-inspired cookies, and yet more books to buy.

Thriving is what we all want for our students, as it has been shown that from so many measures – from health to academic success, those who cultivate the habit of reading for pleasure are those who thrive. We hope Book Week 2024 has indeed manifested the magic of stories and celebrated our passion for reading in the Whole School community.
