Workers Wellbeing Project at Dulwich College (Singapore)

We are proud of DCSG’s community project, which aims to connect us closer to our construction workers on the new building site and show our gratitude. The Workers Wellbeing Project is organised and run by Senior School teachers Uma Ganapathy and Arjun Mistry. This project has brought together students, staff, FOD and Sodexo in a collaboration that focuses on migrant worker wellbeing and provides students engagement and service-learning opportunities.

In September 2022, food was delivered to the migrant workers on-site through donations from Senior School teachers. Senior School students, supported by their teachers and with the help of the Friends of Dulwich (FoD), also banded together to host a special Deepavali dinner for the construction workers who have been vital in the development of our newest building on campus, The Greenhouse. A delicious array of traditional Indian foods were presented for everyone to enjoy, celebrating the joyous occasion. Our CAS students specially designed cards, hand-painted lamps and prepared goodie bags for each of the attendees.

Our work with the wider Dulwich community continued through the academic year. Through the perseverance, organisation and generosity of Marta and Emma from Friends of Dulwich, they provided festive gifts to the construction workers on the new site at DCSG. Our Senior School students presented and distributed the gifts, which served as a fantastic learning opportunity for them and a chance to interact with the broader community. The construction workers were delighted with their beautifully wrapped care packages personalised with “thank you” cards from students showing their gratitude, and a boiler to make hot and cold drinks on site.

The Worker Wellbeing Project also organised a friendly cricket match to mark the close of the academic year and say a huge “thank you” to our Greenhouse heroes for their hard work and dedication. It was a day of thrilling competition and camaraderie between the Year 12 students and workers. The match showcased the players’ skills and passion for cricket while advocating community engagement. Both teams displayed impressive sportsmanship and teamwork, fostering a positive atmosphere through encouragement and collaboration. The event provided an opportunity for workers and students to bond and forge new connections, creating a sense of community and support among participants.

At Dulwich College (Singapore), we believe in providing our students with mindsets, attitudes, behaviours, and approaches to service through the lens of active citizenship and community participation. We aim to ensure reciprocity and shared agency in our service activities and not ‘help’ others but instead connect, listen, learn, share, and work together. We believe in justice above charity and use humility to connect with others and be a part of a solution together.
