Foreign Language Option

Foreign Language

From Year 7, all students study a European language (French, German, or Spanish) for two lessons per week and continue this through Year 8. In addition, Mandarin is a compulsory subject, taught three times a week.

Choosing a European language is an important decision, as students will usually continue with the same language through to their IGCSEs. We pitch the Year 7 and Year 8 European Language course at beginners' level. If your child already speaks a language confidently, we advise you to choose a different language to study.

We do not offer beginner-level language courses in Year 9, so it’s not possible to switch to a new language later on. For this reason, we encourage parents and students to consider their choice carefully, as it lays the foundation for future learning and success in the subject.

To indicate your child’s preferred language option, please complete the ‘Modern Foreign Language Option Form’ included in the checklist of your Admissions Portal:

First Language Programme

If French or Japanese is your child's first language, they have the option to study it in greater depth through our First Language programme, offered from Year 7 to Year 11.

This is a paid programme taught by experienced native-speaking tutors from external education centres. These centres set their own fees and will contact you directly once your child is enrolled into the programme. Please note that availability depends on class sizes and the specific language programme.
